Guwahati is also colloquially called Gauhati at times. It is the largest city in the State of Assam in India. It is also north-eastern India’s biggest metropolis. It is located on the River Brahmaputra’s southern banks and is frequently referred to as the Gateway to North East India. The total area covered by the Guwahati metropolis is approximately 216 square kilometers while the entire zone covers 1,528 square kilometers as per estimates. Guwahati has an elevation of 50-60 meters. It had a population of 957,352 people as of the year 2011. The Assam Capital was once shifted to Dispur, a locality in Guwahati in 1972, after Meghalaya was separated from the State of Assam. Shillong was the previous capital of the combined State. The Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport is the main airport in Guwahati and lies 20 kilometres westwards from the city center. It is located at an area known as Borjhar.
