Idukki is a leading district in Kerala and lies amidst the serene Cardamom Hills and Western Ghats. The district has two towns, namely Thodupuzha and Kattappana. There are five taluks within the district as well. It was made into a district in 1972 and it supplies a major chunk of power in the State through hydroelectric projects. It is also known as the Spice Garden of Kerala. The Periyar River flows through the area along with the Pamba River. There are several wildlife sanctuaries and forests here as well. The Idukki Dam is also one of the highest in Asia. The headquarters of the district are at Painavu. The population stood at 1,093,156 people as of the year 2011. The languages spoken here include English and Malayalam. The Idukki coordinates are 9.85°N 76.94°E.
