Motihari is the headquarters to the District of East Champaran in Bihar. It lies approximately 152.2 km away from Patna. Motihari was earlier known as only Champaran. Mahatma Gandhi had a special association with Champaran and visited the area in 1917 with Raj Kumar Shukla. They began the Satyagraha Movement here which was called the Champaran Satyagraha. The area is governed by the Motihari Municipal Corporation and covers 35 square kilometres. The population of the area was estimated at 126,158 people as of the year 2011. The main languages spoken here include Hindi, Bhojpuri, and Urdu. The coordinates of Motihari are 26°39′00″N 84°55′00″E.
