Bastar is a leading district within Central India’s Chhattisgarh and Jagdalpur is the district headquarters for the entire zone. Bastar was once a part of the Bastar princely state founded back in the early 14th century. The princely states were merged to form this district in Madhya Pradesh earlier after independence. It was divided in 1999 into the current districts. It was also made a part of the new Chhattisgarh State in 2000. It was divided for creating the Kondgaon District in 2012. Bastar is a part of the Red Corridor while languages like Hindi, Chhattisgarhi are spoken here along with Halbi and Gondi. The Dussehra Festival is a major event here while landmarks include the Teerathgarh and Chitrakoot waterfalls. The total area of the zone is 6,597 square kilometers with the population mapped at 834,873 as of the year 2011. The coordinates of the locality are 19.1071° N, 81.9535° E.
