Tawang district is the sub-division of the West Lameng District. The district is located in the western part of Arunachal Pradesh. Spread over 2172 square kilometres, it has Tibet towards its north, Bhutan on the south-western part, and the Sela range separates it from the West Kament on its east. The district got its name from the Tawang Monastery, located in the western part of the district.
It has an 11,202 population speaking Takpa or Dakpa language. It has 3 constituencies and 218 villages. It is 555 km from Guwahati, 320 km from Tezpur, and has an elevation of 2669 metres.
Some famous places to visit are Bumla, Lumla, Sela Pass, Shonga-tser, Zemithang, and PTSO lake.

The nearest railway station to this district is Naharlagun, which connects to major cities. It is a broad-gauge railway line that connects Missamari to Assam to Tawang. Also, there is a Bhalukpong-Tawang railway link that connects to Tawang.
Tawang is on the northern end of NH 13 and 447.5 km from Itanagar. It has good connectivity to the APSRTC bus service to travel in and around the city easily.
