Tawang district is the sub-division of the West Lameng District. The district is located in the western part of Arunachal Pradesh. Spread over 2172 square kilometres, it has Tibet towards its north, Bhutan on the south-western part, and the Sela range separates it from the West Kament on its east. The district got its name from the Tawang Monastery, located in the western part of the district. It has an 11,202 population speaking Takpa or Dakpa language.
