Chiplun is a well-known city lying within the Ratnagiri District in Maharashtra. It is also a commercial cum financial hub of the zone and the headquarters to the Chiplun Taluka. It lies 320 km southwards from Mumbai along the National Highway 66. The city has a rich legacy and historical significance. It has its own Zilla Parishad and Municipal Council. The total area of Chiplun is 24.74 square kilometers while it lies at an elevation of 7 meters. It had 35,000 people as of 2017 and the main language spoken here is Marathi. Chiplun once had the first home of the Chitpavan or Konkanasth Brahmins. Parshuram is reportedly the founder of the community of these Brahmins. Chiplun has its own railway station while reputed educational institutions include the Christ Jyoti Convent High School, Mary Matha School and the United English School.
