Asansol is a metropolitan city and headquarters of Paschim Bardhaman district of West Bengal, India. It has the 33rd largest urban agglomeration in the country. The city has a few nicknames like "The City of Brotherhood" and "Land of Black Diamonds". The city coordinates are 23.68°N and 86.99°E. It ranks 2nd in West Bengal in terms of area, where the metropolis is 326 sq. km, and the metro is 1,615 sq. km. The elevation of Asansol is 111 m above sea level. It experiences hot and dry Summers and mild winters, and the monsoon lasts from June to September. The city is the most populated in West Bengal, with an estimated population of 1,243,414. Bengali and English are the common languages of Asansol.

Asansol Municipal Corporation administers the metropolitan City. Some popular places in the city are Biharinath Hill, Nehru Park, Spandan Recreation Park, Ghagar Buri Chandi Mata Temple, and others.
Kulti (13 km), Durgapur (42 km), and Dhanbad (54 km) are a few neighbouring cities of Asansol. This metropolitan city is connected by the grand trunk Road and by rail with Kolkata, Burdwan and Durgapur. National highway 19 and NH14 run through the city. Vivekananda avenue, Burnpur Road, and S.B Gorai road are the city's major roads. The bus services are operated by the South Bengal State Transport Corporation and North Bengal State Transport Corporation to different destinations. Asansol Junction is the nearest railway station and is one of the oldest divisions of Indian railways. Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport is the domestic airport serving the city and is located in Andal at 25 km from Asansol city bus terminus. An international airport at Dumdum in Kolkata named Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose international airport is near Asansol.
Some famous educational institutions in Asansol are St. Patrick's Higher Secondary School, Kazi Nazrul University, Asansol Girls'College, St. Xavier's College, and others. The city is an important centre for coal trading and has large Railway workshops. Some well-known industries are the Steel Authority of India IISCO, Eastern Coalfields, Chittaranjan Locomotive works, Dishergarh Power Supply, Damodar Valley Corporation, Hindustan Cables limited, and others.
