Bagalakote is a city in the Indian State of Karnataka and is a part of the Bagalakote District, of which it is the headquarters. The River Ghataprabha flows into the locality while being 481 km away from the capital of Bangalore. The population of the area was 111,933 as of 2011. The total area of the city is 49.06 square kilometers. The elevation here is 532 meters. The City Municipal Council is also the governing body for the area. The town was earlier known as Bagadige. The town was reportedly handed over to Bhajantries or musicians by the King of Lanka, Ravana. The area was also governed by the Vijayanagar Empire and the British conquered it in 1818.
