North Goa district is one of the two districts that constitute the state of Goa, India. The district has an area of 1,736 square kilometers (670 square miles) and is bounded by Kolhapur and Sindhudurg districts of Maharashtra state to the north. The administrative headquarters of the district is Panaji, which is also the capital of the state of Goa. Its population growth rate over the decade 2001–2011 was 7.8%. Konkani is the mother tongue of a majority of the people living in the North Goa district. Portuguese is also spoken and understood by a small number of people. Hinduism (76%) is followed by the majority of the population of North Goa. Christians (16%) form a significant minority.
